Kenny Omega Captures IWGP US Title At Wrestle Kingdom 17
Kenny Omega will be bringing a New Japan title back to AEW after he captured the IWGP US Championship from Will Ospreay in a classic bout.
Kenny Omega last set foot in a New Japan Pro Wrestling ring back at Wrestle Kingdom 13 in 2019 – just three days after the announcement that AEW was to be formed. Despite his history in the company, where he led Bullet Club and held the IWGP Heavyweight Championship, Omega was lost to AEW, and with bad blood said to exist between the companies at the time, he didn’t return to NJPW for four years.
Now at Wrestle Kingdom 17 Kenny Omega has competed in an NJPW ring once again as The Best Bout Machine challenged Will Ospreay for the IWGP US Championship in only the second singles match between the men in history. The first of those took place in 2015 in PWG before both men ascended to superstar status, their latest encounter in the Tokyo Dome has only solidified that status for both men.
For over 30 minutes Omega and Ospreay battered each other with the former AEW World Champion’s eye swelling during the encounter and The Assassin being busted open during the encounter. In the end, like so many of Kenny Omega’s matches, the One Winged Angel was enough to bring things to an end and see Omega capture the IWGP US Championship for the second time in his career.
Wrestle Kingdom 17 will also go down in history after former WWE Superstar Sasha Banks made her highly anticipated debut for NJPW.
