Kenny Omega Addresses His Health After Several Big Matches To Start 2023
Kenny Omega has provided some insight into how he is doing physically after having some very difficult matches to start 2023.
The year 2022 was very interesting in the career of former IWGP (NJPW) World Champion and former AEW World Champion Kenny Omega. After holding the AEW World Title for most for 2021, Omega lost it to “Hangman” Adam Page in November 2021 and went on a break after that.
Kenny Omega went on a break because he was physically beaten up after wrestling a grueling schedule and a very physical style for many years. He had multiple surgeries that required a long rehab.
After missing about nine months, Omega was back in AEW in August 2022. When Omega and The Young Bucks (aka The Elite) won the AEW Trios Tag Team Titles as the inaugural champions at All Out in September 2022, the victory was quickly forgotten about due to their locker room fight with CM Punk and Ace Steel. A suspension put Omega on the shelf again for about two months, but when he came back at Full Gear 2022 he looked like he was healed from his past injuries.
From November to early January, The Elite and Death Triangle had a Best of 7 Series that was won by The Elite to give them the Trios Tag Team Titles for the second team. That final match was a Ladder Match on the January 11th edition of Dynamite, which came just one week after Omega’s incredible Wrestle Kingdom 17 match with Will Ospreay on January 4th.
While speaking to ComicBook, Omega spoke about how he’s doing physically.
“I would say before the Best of Seven series and the Tokyo Dome I was feeling pretty good. After completing the Best of Seven Series, which culminated in a Ladder Match, and barely being removed from the match that I did with Will Ospreay at Wrestle Kingdom, it was kind of a slap in the face from reality being like, ‘Hey, don’t go thinking you’re 100% again. We just let you think that for a couple of weeks (laughs). This is your new 100% so get used to it, kid.'”
That was the crashing back down to reality moment for me. Like, okay, I did it. I survived. I’m really proud of this work, but oh boy, it’s going to take a while to recover. It wasn’t like a ‘give me a 24-hour’ kind of thing. It’s been over a week and I’m still feeling it.”
Kenny Omega has been off AEW TV for several weeks due to a reported visa issue, but he’s expected to be back very soon, possibly this Wednesday on AEW Dynamite.
