Kenny Omega Believes “90% Of Wrestlers In WWE Want To Be In AEW”
Kenny Omega is the current AEW World Champion that believes AEW has so much momentum right now that “90% of wrestlers in WWE” want to join AEW.
In addition to being the AEW World Champion, Omega is an Executive Vice President in AEW along with The Young Bucks and Cody Rhodes. The four friends started the company along with the financial backing of AEW President Tony Khan, who is the main booker of AEW’s shows.
Over the last few months, AEW has seen several former WWE superstars join the company. Malakai Black (former Aleister Black) joined AEW in June after his WWE release. CM Punk returned to pro wrestling after a seven-year absence in July. At AEW All out earlier this month, Bryan Danielson and Adam Cole joined AEW after becoming free agents while Ruby Soho went to AEW after WWE released her. In January 2019, Chris Jericho was the first big name to sign with AEW after he was a free agent. Later that year, Jon Moxley joined AEW after his WWE deal expired.
Omega spoke to Tokyo Sports recently about how AEW has a different approach to pro wrestling compared to the “sports entertainment” land known as WWE:
“It’s all about taking a different approach to wrestling, and the fact that the wrestlers are very good. Fortunately, the fans understood [AEW]. And to put it a step further, the wrestlers who were actually performing in WWE began to think, ‘I would like to do this kind of professional wrestling again.’ [Jon] Moxley, CM Punk, and Daniel Bryan all came here in search of what professional wrestling should be.”
Omega talked about being the “best in the world,” which is something CM Punk and Bryan Danielson have been called in their careers:
“Both CM Punk and Bryan are the people who called themselves ‘best’, and wrestled in the place called the ‘best’. But when I’m against them, I don’t have to say that I’m the best because it was the fans, not myself, who started calling me the ‘best’. Now, I want to prove [the fans] right.”
When asked if more WWE superstars might join AEW in the future, Omega was confident that more WWE superstars will go to AEW in the future:
“Absolutely, more will come out in the future. I think about 90% of wrestlers in WWE want to be in AEW.”
Last night on AEW Dynamite in New York City, Omega wrestled Bryan Danielson to a 30-minute time limit draw. The match drew a lot of praise from fans and critics alike with TJRWrestling’s John Canton calling it a five-star match out of five. It was Danielson’s first match in AEW and it should lead to a rematch between the two stars in the future.
The next AEW pay-per-view is Full Gear on Saturday, November 13. No matches have been announced yet.
