Kazuchika Okada Vows To Make History In AEW Tournament
Kazuchika Okada is looking to end 2024 on a high.
Back in November 2023, Tony Khan and Bryan Danielson announced the creation of the Continental Classic — AEW’s answer to New Japan Pro-Wrestling’s famous G1 Climax.
The inaugural edition of the tournament was won by Eddie Kingston who defeated Jon Moxley at Worlds End to claim the newly-minted Continental Championship. Kingston had qualified second in the Blue League behind Bryan Danielson before going on to beat the American Dragon in the semi-finals.
After making four successful defences, Kingston lost the title to Kazuchika Okada on the March 20th edition of Dynamite. Since then, Okada has defeated any and all comers, with his title reign currently standing at 232 days.
Kazuchika Okada Wants To Make History
Fast forward to the November 6th episode of Dynamite, and a video package aired highlighting Okada’s success in tournaments and confirming his entry into the 2024 Continental Classic. Okada has won the G1 Climax on no less than four occasions, with his most recent win coming in 2022.
In the package, Okada declared himself the greatest tournament wrestler in history, while Jim Ross broke down what makes the star so special.
“Okada is one of my favorite talents ever in pro-wrestling.
Truck loads of charisma and skill.
(In a) list of the top five wrestlers in the entire world, most people who are knowledgeable will have him in that list of the top five.
Some (would put him) at number one.”
Although the start date for the tournament has yet to be confirmed, Mark Briscoe recently claimed it will begin on Thanksgiving Eve. At present, only Okda has been confirmed for the tournament, while Eddie Kingston will be unable to compete after suffering a broken leg and serious knee injury back in May.
