Johnny Gargano Calls AEW Tag Teams “Once In A Generation” Stars

Johnny Gargano

Former NXT Superstar Johnny Gargano has named two AEW tag teams as the kind you would normally only see “once in a generation”.

Since arriving in AEW in May 2020, FTR have gradually become arguably the company’s hottest tag team. Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler have won over the AEW fanbase with a hard-hitting wrestling style and no-nonsense promos.

One team that comes close to their current popularity are The Young Bucks, Matt and Nick Jackson. For Johnny Gargano, these teams are the best in the modern era.

Gargano has plenty of experience working with FTR when the two were working in WWE as The Revival. Their NXT rivalry with Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa – known as DIY – is widely seen as one of the greatest in NXT history. The feud was a big part of the black and gold brand throughout the second half of 2016 and early 2017.

During an appearance on Good Karma Wrestling, Johnny Gargano talked about the feud with FTR and praised both them and the Bucks as teams:

“It’s awesome to see, man, and it’s something that I could’ve told you a long, long time ago. FTR, Revival, whatever you want to call them, they’ve been one of the best tag teams for a very, very, very, very, very long time, and me and Tommaso were lucky enough to have that series with them where we did Takeover: Brooklyn and Takeover: Toronto and have those tag team matches with those two guys because, for my money, they are the best tag team in the world currently.

And I always, I said for a very, very, long time and I still do believe this, FTR and Young Bucks are just once in a generation tag teams.”

While Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa went their separate ways in 2017, Harwood and Wheeler went from strength to strength as a team.

Soon after joining AEW, fans finally got to see the FTR vs. The Young Bucks feud both teams had been hinting at online for years and Tte two teams are now sitting at one win each.

In 2022, FTR have amassed tag gold from around the world, holding the AAA, IWGP, and ROH Tag Team Championships.

While many expected them to be on a collision course with The Young Bucks to settle who is the best once and for all, the two suprisingly lost the AEW Tag Team Championships to Keith Lee and Swerve Strickland on the latest edition of Dynamite.

Johnny Gargano, meanwhile, has been taking a break from wrestling since December 2021 when he let his WWE contract expire so he could spend time with his wife Candice LeRae and their newborn son.
