John Cena To Ex-WWE Champion: “You’re Gonna Be The Next One”
John Cena praised ex-WWE Tag Team Champion David Otunga after their first match together.
On April 5, 2010, Otunga made his WWE RAW debut in a tag team match with John Cena for the Unified WWE Tag Team Championship against The Big Show and The Miz. The match also saw him turn heel.
John Cena Recognized David Otunga’s Potential When They First Teamed Up In WWE
David Otunga recalled the memorable match of his early WWE career on his YouTube podcast.
He explained that he felt incredibly happy when John Cena tagged him into a match for the first time and welcomed him warmly with a private comment.
He was very proud of himself when John Cena recognized his potential and predicted he could be a future star.
I remember when he went to tag me in for the first time. He said, “You ready?” And I said, “Yeah.” I tagged in. He goes, “Welcome to the WWE, kid.” It was awesome. I’ll always remember that moment, and it’s just something that, like, you know, only he and I heard. It was just between the two of us.
But anyway, it was so much fun. I got in there. I held my own with my extremely limited knowledge, but held my own. And then when I double-crossed him, that pop was so big. That felt amazing. That felt amazing.
And being a heel, like I loved it. Just like this is so cool. And you know, we go backstage, and everybody was so happy. Everybody was blown away with my performance and hosting, the whole show, but also the main event.
And you know, Vince was super happy. Cena came back. This was the happiest and nicest John Cena has ever been to me, my entire life. But he tells me how awesome I did. And he’s like, I remember this. I wrote this down in my journal.
And he’s like, “Man, Katie’s like, ‘You’re gonna be the next one.” And he’s like, “I’m so excited.” He goes, “Now, listen. I want you to start riding with me like when you first come up on the road. I want us to ride together, you know, for a little bit.”
And I was like, “Is this real? Is this really happening?” Like, this is honestly a dream come true. And yeah, I wrote about this in my journal. (From 14:49 – 16:14)
