John Cena Confirms If WWE Title Win Has Changed Retirement Plans
John Cena has addressed his wrestling future after being the WWE Champion for the 17th time at WrestleMania 41.
It was in July 2024 at WWE’s Money in the Bank PLE when John Cena announced that he would be retiring as a pro wrestler and WWE superstar at the end of 2025.
After he made his announcement, Cena made it clear that 2025 was goin to be his last year competing in a WWE ring.
John Cena competed in his third match of 2025 at WrestleMania 41 and he beat Cody Rhodes to become the WWE Champion for a record 17th time in his career. It was a not a clean win for Cena since he had help from rapper Travis Scott. Many fans hated the match, but for Cena as a heel champion, perhaps it is WWE getting the response they wanted.
While speaking on the Pat McAfee Show one day after his historic WWE Title win, John Cena addressed if he still plans to walk away at the end of this year.
“When I won my first title, I made a promise, ‘When I’m a step slower, I’m gone.’ If you watch my stuff from 2015 and watch my stuff today; I’m a step slower. So you know what, I’m gone. I made that promise to these people behind me. Whether they like it or not, I know wrestling retirements aren’t real because there is always a payout involved.
I’ve been in the business almost 25 years and the business has been good to me. I’ve been smart with my money and I will have a life without want and I know how appreciated I am. I never once take that for granted.”
No Amount Of Money Will Bring John Cena Back After He Retires
John Cena is one of the biggest stars in WWE history who has gone on to become very successful in Hollywood over the last decade. While talking about his future, Cena made it clear that no amount of money is going to change his retirement plans.
“There is no amount of money and not a check, this is a shot across the bow to any casino owner, any territory owner, any promotion owner, you can’t write me a check to bring me back.
In December, I am done because of the promise I made to them. Whether I like them or I don’t, at least I go out keeping my word. December, I’m gone.”
Since Cena plays a heel character in WWE, it’s possible that some fans don’t believe his words, but the WWE Champion seems determined to stick to his word, at least for now.
