John Cena Welcomed Ex-WWE Star To Roster With Unique Drinking Ritual

When a WWE superstar was called up to the main roster, John Cena welcomed him with some alcoholic drinks on a bus.

It was in January 2011 when CM Punk was leading a group called the New Nexus and a powerhouse wrestler showed up to decimate John Cena. That man’s name was Mason Ryan and he became a new member of Punk’s Nexus group.

Mason Ryan was a powerhouse wrestler from Wales who was part of the WWE roster for about five years with his last match coming in 2014. Injuries sidelined Ryan for part of his WWE run while he never seemed to grasp what it took to be a major star in the company.

In an interview with Metro, Mason Ryan revealed that after his debut on the WWE main roster, he spent the night drinking with WWE’s biggest star John Cena on Cena’s bus. Ryan recalled when Cena’s bus driver summoned Ryan to the bus.

“I just threw my clothes quickly after showering and left my bags there because I just thought I’m just going to see John, and he’s going to say congratulations, or welcome to the team, or something like that.

‘So I hop on the bus and he says, “Hey, take a seat”. And then he started bringing out some drinks. I’m thinking, “Okay, we’re going to have a beer or two.

‘Then after an hour, he starts bringing out the whiskey. And then he starts bringing out the moonshine.”

John Cena Got Mason Ryan Drunk After WWE Debut

When Ryan mentioned he needed to be up by around 4 A.M. the next morning to get his flight to the next show, Cena assured him that it would be okay.

“Cena said, “Oh, don’t worry!” I had a connection, and the connection was only an hour away or so. We got my bags and instead of catching the first flight, we drove to wherever that second flight would be.

‘And I’ll be honest, he got me pretty drunk! At one point, we were drinking a beer, a shot of whiskey, and then and washing it down with a moonshine. So it was quite the blur!”

‘That was one of the craziest things about that [debut], getting hammered on John Cena’s bus that night.’

As the storytelling continued, Ryan recalled how Cena told Ryan that at one point, Ryan got up to go to the bathroom, and Cena saw him nearly fall over.

After his wrestling career ended, Ryan (whose real name is Barri Griffiths) joined Cirque Soliel and told Metro everything worked out because “I’m working for an amazing company in Cirque du Soleil, putting on an amazing show every night.”

John Cena will make his WWE return on the highly anticipated Monday Night Raw debut on Netflix in Los Angeles. It will be the start of his final year in WWE as an in-ring competitor since Cena has made it clear that he will retire by the end of 2025.

It has also been reported that the current plan for John Cena at WrestleMania 41 is for him to face the Undisputed WWE Champion Cody Rhodes in what would be Cena’s final WrestleMania match.
