John Cena Will Allegedly Return To WWE To Help Potential Gunther Opponent

Gunther is no longer just another talent on the WWE roster.

After his victory over John Cena at Saturday Night’s Main Event, The Ring General has become a force that is threatening legacies.

Cena rode off into the sunset with a smile on his face as he tapped out to the Austrian in his final match on Saturday.

The decision has not sat well with many fans, but the outcome is now registered in the history books, and there is no changing it.

While John Cena has promised never to compete inside the squared circle again, he has not ruled out appearances. In fact, even before his retirement match, WWE advertised his next appearance.

During a recent appearance on the Busted Open Podcast, Hall of Famer Bully Ray pitched an idea featuring a rivalry between Gunther and Cody Rhodes that could see Cena aid The American Nightmare.

One day, Cody Rhodes is going to be face-to-face with Gunther… By the time we get there, Gunther will have been built up to a level where he will be the immovable object. He’s going to be THAT guy. Cody is going to have doubts, and Cody is going to have a problem with Gunther… One day, like a Force ghost, John Cena will return at the right moment to remind Cody who he is. In my world, that’s what I see happening.

Gunther Could Retire More Legends After John Cena

Before retiring John Cena, Gunther had already retired Goldberg in July 2025.

As a result, he has not gained the reputation of a man who is after WWE’s legends, similar to the “Legend Killer” gimmick Randy Orton had in the early 2000s.

While speaking on The Stevie Richards Show, the former WWE star discussed the possibility of the 38-year-old retiring more legends in the coming times.

Here’s a thought that I just had. By the way, do you think Gunther is going to be the new legend killer? He retired Goldberg. He retired Cena.

What if Orton’s next? What if Orton’s [retiring] in the next year to 18 months? What if he retires AJ Styles? They could because how many times did Orton like destroy Legends?
