John Cena Soaked Up Wisdom From This WWE Icon

A legendary match with a WWE Hall of Famer was a great learning experience for John Cena early in his career.

One of the longest matches in WWE history took place on April 23, 2007, when the WWE Champion John Cena faced Shawn Michaels in a non-title match on Raw in London, England.

That match between Cena and Michaels was a rematch of their WrestleMania 23 main event that saw Cena defeat Michaels in a great match.

In the Raw match, the two legends went 55:49 with Michaels nailing one of his patented Sweet Chin Music superkicks that led to Michaels landing on top of Cena for the pinfall win. It was a rare clean loss for Cena in that era when WWE was doing its best to establish him as the top guy in the company. It is also considered one of the greatest matches in Raw history.

While making comments in a video on the WWE Vault YouTube channel about some of Raw’s greatest moments, John Cena shared his memory of that legendary match with Shawn Michaels.

“I remember it being a ton of fun. The UK crowd is always so live and interactive. When you are lucky enough to be in there with Shawn Michaels, you just have to do what you’re supposed to do but he takes care of everything else … all the loose ends.”

Cena went on to talk about what it was like working with a two-time WWE Hall of Famer like Michaels.

“Shawn is such a good storyteller. Wins, losses, it’s a chance to be on the stage. I got to soak up the wisdom of one of the greatest in-ring performers for an hour. It was really something.”

John Cena Trying To Win One More Royal Rumble Match

During their WWE careers, John Cena and Shawn Michaels have both won two Royal Rumble matches. It’s unlikely that Michaels will ever win another one since he retired as a wrestler in 2010, but in Cena’s case, he has one more shot.

John Cena did an emotional promo during Raw’s Netflix premiere in Los Angeles where he admitted that he hasn’t won many singles matches in the last few years, but he has a shot to be a 17-time World Champion if he wins the Royal Rumble on February 1st in Indianapolis. By the end of the promo, Cena was full of confidence while the WWE fans were totally behind him.

In addition to Cena, Roman Reigns has also declared that he will be in the Royal Rumble as well. Other big names like CM Punk, Drew McIntyre, Seth Rollins and plenty of others could be in the match as well, which means it could be the most star-studded Roayl Rumble in WWE history.
