John Cena On The Key Differences Between WWE And Hollywood

WWE Superstar turned Hollywood megastar John Cena discussed the key differences between choreographed fights in wrestling and movies.

Speaking on “Bullseye with Jesse Thorn,” John Cena shared his preference for the cinematic approach to fight scenes over live wrestling performances, highlighting the distinct disciplines each medium requires.

They’re just two different disciplines. The strategies you learn in live performance are different than the strategies you would incorporate with camera cutaways,

Cena explained. Having successfully transitioned from the wrestling ring to the big screen, he emphasised the unique techniques used in both arenas. In the world of film, safety is the top priority, with choreography designed to avoid actual impact. Cena elaborated:

In the movies, everything should be a miss, because you can stack it and it’s safety first. The goal really is not to hit the other person you’re fighting.

This method allows filmmakers to use creative camera angles and editing techniques to craft the illusion of intense combat without risking physical harm. In contrast, the live nature of wrestling necessitates a more direct approach, with performers required to make physical contact during matches.

In live performance, you can’t stack punches, you have to bring them all so there’s a lot more physical contact,

Cena noted. The immediacy of live wrestling means that every move must be convincing in real-time, adding to the physical demands of the sport. Despite his extensive wrestling background, Cena expressed a clear preference for the cinematic style, appreciating the artistry and safety it offers.

I like the magic, I don’t like getting hit in the face, so I like the magic aspect of cinema,

he admitted. The ability to film scenes in segments and craft them into a seamless final product is a unique advantage of filmmaking that Cena values.
