John Cena Names Former Rival “Nicest Human Being In WWE”
John Cena has worked with several superstars throughout his WWE career and has had intense rivalries that are etched in the promotion’s history.
Now, The Champ has always dedicated himself to the art and has built storylines that urged the audience to engage with it.
However, he didn’t work creative angles just because a script demanded it. He would find a connection with the opponent that would help the story of why his character disliked the rival.
John Cena couldn’t find the anecdote about AJ Styles
The Champ appeared on The Bill Simmons Podcast and discussed the end of his WWE career. During the conversation, he explained that he would always try to find an anecdote that would explain the bitterness between the characters. However, he revealed that he could never find any such anecdotes about AJ Styles.
I never ask, ‘How can I look good?’ When I sit down with an opponent, I love anecdotes. The first time I ever worked with AJ Styles — he is the nicest human being in sports entertainment. And I always have some sort of, I can find some energy of, like, ‘You said this about me in an interview once’ or ‘Man, I don’t like the way you work’ or whatever. AJ’s such a good guy.
And I sat down, and I’m like, ‘Man, this is going to be okay. Why are we fighting?’ It’s like, ‘What do you mean? Why are we fighting? I want to be the champ.’ That’s not good enough. ‘Take a second to yourself, figure out why we’re fighting.’ I went on my bus, scoured the web to try to find out anything this guy’s ever said. Just anything, a sentence. Never speaks bad about anybody. [h/t: Wrestling Observer]
In fact, it was The Phenomenal One who helped John Cena find that anecdote by investigating a situation where the character AJ Styles always thought of himself as a better superstar than The Champ. This helped John Cena establish the bitterness needed for the story.
