John Cena Linked With Huge Match At WrestleMania 41
John Cena could be in line for one more World Title victory.
Back in 2005, John Cena became a WWE World Champion for the first time, beating JBL at WrestleMania 21. The star went on to win World Championship gold a further 15 times, with his most recent victory coming in 2017.
This remarkable record has Cena level with Ric Flair for the record number of World Title wins. Historians and even Flair himself have claimed his record of 16 wins is too low, but this is the figure WWE has enshrined in its own history.
So naturally, when Cena announced his plans to retire in 2025, many fans wondered whether he’d get one more run as champion. And it seems WWE is at least thinking about making the rumour a reality.
John Cena To Get One More Shot At World Title Glory?
While discussing the possible main event for WrestleMania 41 in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Dave Meltzer threw out the idea of a match between Cena and Cody Rhodes. Interestingly, Meltzer noted there have been talks about Cena challenging for either the World Heavyweight Title or Undisputed WWE Title at the event.
They also could do Rhodes vs. Cena with the idea of Cena in his last attempt at winning the title can break Flair’s fictitious 16 number that in WWE history he and Cena are tied at. We do know that the idea of Cena challenging one of the two champions, in an effort to have him break Flair’s record is something strongly talked about, including for Mania.
During a recent interview, former WWE announcer and on-screen personality Jonathan Coachman suggested the company is looking to erase Ric Flair. Coachman added that having Cena pass Flair in their record books would be another way to put more distance between themselves and the controversial star.
