Why John Cena Changed Finishing Move Name From FU To Attitude Adjustment

John Cena Attitude Adjustment on Randy Orton

John Cena backs the decision to change the name of his finishing move from the FU to the Attitude Adjustment.

Any WWE fan who watched John Cena in the first few years of his career knows that his finishing move was called the FU, not Attitude Adjustment.

The reason for the FU name is that Brock Lesnar was a main event performer before Cena and a popular one as well. Since Lesnar was using the F5 as his finishing move, Cena decided to counter it by saying this is the “F**k You” to Lesnar’s move. Since Cena was portraying a rapper character in WWE at the time, it fit his character to have a finishing move in which he would swear at his opponent and the fans.

It was in May 2008 that WWE went from TV-14 to TV-PG, which meant they had to cut some of the crude language. In Cena’s case, it was a change for his finishing move, which was called the Attitude Adjustment instead of the FU.

Over the years, Cena has beaten every big name in his era of WWE with the Attitude Adjustment, or the AA as some like to call it. Sometimes, Cena has to deliver an even bigger version of the AA by going to the middle rope and delivering a Super Attitude Adjustment, which is sometimes called an Avalanche Attitude Adjustment since it’s coming off the ropes.

John Cena Was Okay With WWE Changing The FU To Attitude Adjustment

During his appearance on the Bill Simmons podcast, John Cena spoke about the evolution of his finishing move as something to counter Brock Lesnar, and then turning into the Attitude Adjustment.

“Brock Lesnar’s move was the F5. I had a similar move where we both pick guys up. I didn’t try to make Brock look bad, but I was abrasive with my trash talk and was like, ‘You have the F5, I have the FU.’ That’s where the name of the move happened.

I kept using it and then as we evolved into PG, I was told, ‘We can’t use that anymore.’

Switching it to the Attitude Adjustment has been incredible because, it’s so weird that art imitates life. I’m always trying to change people’s perspective or offer a new perspective. I’m leaning into the fact that you can adjust your attitude at any moment. That really changes the dynamic. It evolved because it had to.”

In his final WWE match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th, John Cena will try to use the Attitude Adjustment to beat former World Champion Gunther in their first ever (and last ever) matchup.
