John Cena Predicts Bright Future For Current WWE Champion

John Cena Run WWE

John Cena believes a current WWE Champion is among the many wrestlers with a bright future in the company.

In his final match at WWE’s Saturday Night’s Main Event, John Cena requested that the card feature main roster wrestlers facing NXT talent, who are the future of the company.

On the undercard of SNME, WWE Champion Cody Rhodes faced NXT Champion Oba Femi, future Hall of Famer faced former NXT Women’s North American Champion Sol Ruca, and World Tag Team Champions AJ Styles & Dragon Lee faced NXT’s Je’Von Evans & TNA’s Leon Slater, both of whom are just 21 years old.

Before his main event match against Gunther, which saw Cena tap out in his final WWE match, fans got to see the stars of today literally facing some potentially huge stars of tomorrow.

While talking to Cody Rhodes on his What Do You Wanna Talk About podcast, John Cena spoke about the 27-year-old NXT Champion Oba Femi, who has been very impressive in NXT even though he’s only been wrestling on television for about three years. While speaking about Femi, Cena spoke about his future.

Cena: “First of all, thank you for being part of that, because when your music hits, to a crowd that knows you, it immediately brings a certain level to the live event. And you were gracious enough to work with an up and coming talent that has an incredibly bright future ahead of him. Probably not your last match with that behemoth.”

Rhodes: “I would say not. Nearly took my ear off.”

Cena: “But you introduced him to the noise. He got to hear it for the first time. That was a personal selfish goal of mine; how many folks can we get around the noise? Lets take our top talent and put them with new talent, just so on this one night they can hear, hearing loud noise is one thing, hearing that level of noise is another thing. Now they’ve heard it and they have something to strive for.”

The “noise” Cena referred to was being in a huge match with a major WWE superstar like Rhodes. Femi has main evented NXT shows in the past, but it could be argued that facing Cody Rhodes in a match at Saturday Night’s Main Event was the biggest match of Femi’s career up to this point.

John Cena Praised Cody Rhodes’ Work Ethic

Later in the same podcast, John Cena had some very kind words to say about the man he headlined WrestleMania 41 and SummerSlam with, Cody Rhodes. The two men traded wins with Cena getting his record-setting 17th WWE World Title at WrestleMania and Rhodes winning the title back at SummerSlam.

“I wanna thank you because you are goin’ nose to nose and you go as hard, in some cases harder than I can imagine. Your work ethic is aspirational. You will joust that. Here is my volley.

You are responsible for more than yourself. For many of these years I was runnin’ a one man show. And it was like if you wanna ride the wake, I’m the boat. You can get a tow and some skis but we’re doin’it my way.”

As Cena spoke about Rhodes, the WWE Champion was emotional and in tears.

“You’re a family man, a dedicated father, a wonderful husband. You got people to support and that support you, and sometimes that helps, but you are juggling so much more than I ever possibly could. So thank you for overstaying. You gave me another 35 minutes. It’s not lost on me, and a lot of me wanting to milk this is just, I miss my friend and I wanted a conversation with my friend.”
