Jim Ross Recalls Matt Hardy's SummerSlam 2004 Spoiler Blunder

In a recent episode of his podcast “Grilling JR,” legendary WWE commentator Jim Ross shed light on a controversial incident involving Matt Hardy at SummerSlam 2004. The event, which saw Hardy lose a high-stakes match against Kane with Lita’s hand in marriage on the line, became infamous for reasons beyond the ring.

Ross recounted how Hardy inadvertently spoiled the match’s outcome on his personal website, describing it as a “teachable moment” for the entire WWE roster. Ross expressed his disappointment in Hardy’s lapse in judgment.

Matt s**t the bed on that decision.

Despite his criticism, Ross was quick to affirm his admiration for the Hardy brothers, reminiscing about their humble beginnings.

I think the world of the Hardys. God Almighty, I hired them, and their little homemade outfits that they made on their late Mama’s sewing machine.”

Ross speculated on Hardy’s motivations, suggesting he might have been ‘trying to get a scoop, trying to get hits’ on his website. However, the veteran commentator emphasised the poor timing and inappropriateness of revealing such sensitive information.

It was the wrong place, wrong time to provide that information. It may have been good for a few minutes on his website. But all in all, it was a mistake to reveal that info. Just think about it, it just didn’t make any sense…. he’s revealing the finish of the match.

Matt Hardy would take time off following the event to undergo knee surgery and was later released from the company during his recovery due to unprofessional conduct after also revealing online that his girlfriend Lita was having a real-life affair with Edge.
