Jim Ross Ranks “Big Show” Paul Wight Among Wrestling’s Greatest Giants
AEW commentator Jim Ross shared his perspective on Paul Wight’s place in wrestling history, weighing in on how the former Big Show compares to other legendary big men.
Speaking on his podcast Grilling JR, Jim Ross acknowledged Wight’s contributions to the industry but made it clear that one name still stands above all others.
“Nobody’s going to top Andre because of his longevity and his productivity, but Big Show has a place. He never has quite lived up to it, but he’s close.”
Wight, known for his impressive runs in WCW and WWE before signing with AEW, has been regarded as one of wrestling’s most agile giants. However, Ross believes certain factors prevented him from fully realising his potential, including his exposure and physical conditioning.
“He was an important cog in a couple of major companies and always did good. He was underdeveloped because of his overexposure, in my opinion, but I always enjoyed working with Paul and I enjoyed being around him.”
One of the biggest struggles throughout Wight’s career, according to Ross, was maintaining an optimal weight. WWE officials, including Ross himself, faced difficulties in managing this aspect of his career.
“It’s just the fact that I wasn’t a very good salesman, apparently, on weight loss issues. I wish we would have done better with him because he could have been a lot more viable if he had followed our direction and our encouragement of losing weight, and if we had stuck by our guns on his weight loss and weighing him in.”
While Ross doesn’t see Wight surpassing Andre the Giant’s legacy, he still recognises his significant impact on the wrestling world, cementing his status as one of the top giants in the business.
What Future In WWE Does Jim Ross Predict For Ricky Starks?
Jim Ross spoke about the future of Ricky Starks in WWE and that he isn’t quite sure how his career will turn out with them. Ross said that he doesn’t believe Starks has the calibre to become the next Shawn Michaels but he hopes that Starks achieves his wrestling dreams and does as well as he can.
