Jim Ross Picks Cody Rhodes Match As His Favourite In AEW

A very personal match featuring Cody Rhodes stands out to Jim Ross as a favourite match in AEW history.

The launch of AEW in January 2019 included some big names associated with the company like Chris Jericho and WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross. The presence of Jericho and Ross gave AEW a lot of credibility while also building around the company’s Executive Vice Presidents like Cody Rhodes, Kenny Omega, and The Young Bucks – Matt & Nick Jackson.

Double or Nothing 2019 was the first AEW PPV in the company’s history and it took place over four months before the first episode of AEW Dynamite aired. One of the big matches at Double or Nothing 2019 saw Cody Rhodes defeat his brother Dustin Rhodes in a memorable bloodbath that wrestling fans still talk about over five years later.

Jim Ross was part of the commentary team for the Cody-Dustin classic. While speaking on his Grilling JR podcast, Ross called the Rhodes brothers’ battle as his favorite match that he has called in an AEW ring.

“Dustin [Rhodes] versus Cody [Rhodes]. I love that match, and I’ll say it today, all these months and weeks and years later, that was the best I ever called in AEW to date.

There have been a lot of good ones, but that was so–that match had the unique emotional element that you couldn’t get in just an angle, or storyline. They’re real brothers, and that had told a great story leading into it, and then man, they delivered like champions in the match itself.

So I’ll always be grateful for those two guys, Cody and Dustin, for having the match, and then I feel very blessed that I was part of the broadcast team.”

Cody Rhodes Victorious On WWE SmackDown

As the Undisputed WWE Champion, Cody Rhodes is a man with a target on his back as evidenced by Chad Gable challenging Rhodes to a match on SmackDown. Rhodes won the match over Gable, but Gable did some damage because Rhodes was without his boot on by the end of the match since Gable worked on Rhodes’ left foot a lot during the match.

After the match was over, Kevin Owens attacked Cody Rhodes by stomping on the left ankle. Owens will face Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main event on December 14th with the WWE Title on the line.
