Jim Ross Names Lesson Modern Commentators Need To Learn
Jim Ross has some advice.
After starting his career back in the 1970s, Jim Ross spent decades honing his craft and will ultimately go down as one of the greatest commentators professional wrestling has ever seen.
Ross has called the action for Mid-South Wrestling, Jim Crockett Promotions, WCW, and NJPW, but he’ll always be best known for calling many of the most famous moments in WWE history. From Mankind being launched from the top of Hell In A Cell to Mike Tyson going toe-to-toe with Steve Austin, Ross was on the call. And who can forget him desperately urging Jeff Hardy to make himself famous?
So perhaps there’s no one better placed to run the rule over those calling the action in 2025.
On the most recent episode of his Grilling JR podcast, the Hall of Famer said the current generation can be a little guilty of speaking too much, instead of letting the action in the ring play out.
“I do. I think they should let the pictures speak more volumes than not. Laying out is an art form. It’s not a matter of if you lay out, it’s a matter of when you lay out and let the action on the television screen speak for itself.
I think they could do a better job and a better service to their brand and the product if they laid out just a little bit more and let things evolve and then react to that as opposed to just filling time and as you said, getting themselves over. That don’t work for me.”
Jim Ross To Make AEW Return At All In
Just weeks after undergoing surgery for colon cancer, Jim Ross has confirmed he’ll be back in the commentary booth at AEW All In. Ross announced the diagnosis on May 15, but after a successful surgery, he’ll be on hand to call AEW’s biggest event of the year less than two months later.
Although he doesn’t know which match he’ll be calling, Ross said he’d love to commentate on the bout between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. The long-time rivals are set to meet with both the International and Continental Championships on the line. The winner will be known as the Unified Champion.
