Why Jeff Hardy Ignored Ending Major WWE Match Early
Jeff and Matt Hardy wrestled in a historic Extreme Rules match at WrestleMania 25 in which a dangerous spot was planned
Jeff Hardy is no stranger to high-risk maneuvers and bump-taking. The WWE Icon is well known for doing dangerous spots in matches that would take the roof off of arenas.
One of the biggest matches of either of the Hardy Boys’ careers came in the form of an Extreme Rules match at WrestleMania 25. The brothers feuded after Matt Hardy turned heel in Royal Rumble 2009 and even changed his finishing move’s name from Twist Of Fate to Twist Of Hate.
The match had both Hardys go through tables and take bumps from atop ladders. The finale was the Twist of Hate executed by Matt on Jeff with the latter’s head in a steel chair.
Jeff Hardy took the devastating move and was pinned by his brother Matt, to lose the match.
In a recent podcast sit-down, Jeff revealed that the referee asked both of them to ‘go home,’ meaning he made a call to end the match early, despite the planned finish.
Jeff Hardy Says Referee Asked Him And Matt To “Go Home”
Speaking on the Open & Direct Discussion podcast, Jeff Hardy said that he was the first wrestler to take the Twist of Hate move on the steel chair. This spot came after Jeff dropped a big leg drop off the top of a ladder and missed Matt. Although he was asked to “go home” at that point by the referee, Jeff Hardy continued the match to take the Twist of Hate onto the chair, creating an iconic WrestleMania moment for the finish.
I can say I was the first one to ever take the first Twist Of Hate in the chair. Because after the big leg drop, there was a signal through the referee to like, go home then, but my exact words, I had two words for that, and it was like, ‘fuck that,’ and then we did the Twist Of Hate, and I was so proud of the way it looked.
Jeff Hardy can be seen in action in TNA’s Thursday Night Impact, which will air on the AMC network.
