JBL Names Former WWE Stars Who Deserved A World Title

WWE Hall of Famer John Bradshaw Layfield has shared his thoughts on wrestlers who he believes should have won a world title during their time in the company.

Speaking on the Something to Wrestle podcast, JBL highlighted several superstars he felt were deserving of the top prize but never had the opportunity to hold it.

“I think Ted [DiBiase] should have been the WWE Champion, I think he should have been for a long time. I think [Roddy] Piper should have, I think Dustin Rhodes, especially as Goldust, I thought Goldust should have been a champion, I thought he’d have been a great champion. He was a great worker that did everything and had incredible heat. I mean, there’s tons and tons of guys. Shelton Benjamin should have been a World Champion—there are so many guys.”

Despite his legendary career, DiBiase never officially won the company’s top title, although he briefly claimed possession of it after purchasing the belt from Andre the Giant in 1988 at The Main Event. His official accolades include reigns as World Tag Team, North American Heavyweight, 24/7, and Million Dollar Champion.

Roddy Piper, widely regarded as one of WWE’s greatest villains, held the Intercontinental and World Tag Team Championships but never reached the world title scene.

Dustin Rhodes, best known for his Goldust persona, also never won a world title but captured the Hardcore and Intercontinental Championships, as well as multiple tag team titles.

Shelton Benjamin, an elite athlete, claimed the Raw Tag Team, 24/7, Intercontinental, and United States Championships but was never given a run as World Champion.

Which WWE Star Did JBL Not Think Would Become A Top Star?

JBL spoke about a current WWE star he once thought didn’t have what it takes to become a star in the wrestling business and named none other than two-time WWE Champion, The Miz. JBL said that he thought since Miz didn’t have a wrestling background before joining WWE, that he wouldn’t be able to make it as a star in the top wrestling promotion in the world. However, JBL now thinks that Miz has built a Hall of Fame worthy career during his 21 years with the company.
