Jay White Challenges AEW Star
IWGP World Heavyweight Champion ‘Switchblade’ Jay White clearly thinks highly of one particular AEW wrestler.
In a bygone era, being challenged by the champion was seen as a very big deal. In a way it still is; in New Japan, a champion usually announces his challengers instead of vice-versa. And while this particular match hasn’t been announced as a title match, it’ll be a big deal for Eddie Kingston all the same.
White closed this week’s edition of NJPW Strong by announcing that he’ll be coming to Kingston’s hometown since Kingston “didn’t have the balls to come to him”. He strongly implied that the two wrestlers will clash on October 28th at Rumble on 44th Street, which takes place at the Palladium Times Square in New York City.
Kingston has yet to issue a formal statement, but he did retweet a video of White’s challenge.
Should this match be confirmed, it would continue an existing trend that sees Kingston wrestle outside (usually Japanese) wrestlers while representing AEW. Kingston has already had several highly-regarded matches in this role. These include his match against Tomohiro Ishii at NJPW Capitol Collision, his six-man tag match against the JAS and Minoru Suzuki at Forbidden Door, and his singles match against Konosuke Takeshita from the July 6the episode of Dynamite.
