Jake Roberts Says He Didn’t Want To Interact With The Road Warriors When They Joined WWE
WWE Hall of Famer Jake Roberts has shared candid insights into how his once-close relationship with legendary tag team The Road Warriors deteriorated by the time they reunited in WWE in 1990.
Speaking on his podcast The Snake Pit, Jake Roberts recalled the early days of his friendship with Hawk and Animal during their time in Georgia Championship Wrestling in the early 1980s. Back then, the three enjoyed a strong camaraderie, but nearly a decade later, their reunion in WWE was far from warm.
“Oh, I was excited, and I was happy for them,” Roberts said. “I hadn’t seen them in all of those years, but they had changed a lot. They got to thinking they were more than they were, and they just had an attitude about them, and it was sour, and it wasn’t right.”
Roberts noted that the shift in their demeanour was significant, highlighting that fame had affected them and strained the bond they once shared. When asked if he had ever considered trying to reconnect with the iconic duo, his answer was unequivocal.
“I didn’t want any part of that; it wasn’t right for me, and it wouldn’t have been a good thing for me,” he said. “We both had changed; those guys had changed too, and it just wouldn’t have been a good fit.”
Despite Roberts’ personal issues with The Road Warriors, they went on to capture the WWE World Tag Team Championship in 1991 and again when they returned to the company in 1997. Hawk and Animal are considered to be one of the most influential tag teams of all time, and they were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2011.
Does Jake Roberts Believe He Could Have Surpassed Hulk Hogan’s Popularity In The 1980s?
Jake Roberts spoke about how he believes he could have surpassed Hulk Hogan’s huge popularity in the 1980s, but that he did not like working as a babyface as he found it to be constricting in terms of his in-ring work and promos. Despite this, Roberts thinks that if he could have been a babyface for a lengthy period of time, he could have become WWE’s top babyface.
