Hulk Hogan Claims He Once Pitched Heel Turn Under The Name “Triple H” After WrestleMania 6
WWE Hall of Famer Hulk Hogan once claimed that he suggested turning heel and adopting the name “Triple H” following his WrestleMania 6 main event against The Ultimate Warrior. However, the idea was quickly shut down by WWE Chairman Vince McMahon.
Speaking on a 2019 episode of The Steve Austin Show podcast, Hulk Hogan reflected on his loss to Warrior at WrestleMania 6, which ended his 364-day reign as WWF Champion. During the match’s planning, Hogan said he questioned what would come next for his character, prompting him to propose a drastic shift.
“When we did the WrestleMania thing, we did the build-up pretty good, and then it gets time to go over the finish and whether I’m going over or not,” Hogan recalled. “I have the same two questions: Why are we doing this, and what happens next? When I was told to put the Warrior over, I asked those questions, and Vince said, ‘I think the red and yellow is over, we have gotten everything we can out of it.’”
Hogan then pitched a post-match attack on Warrior, suggesting he reinvent himself with a new persona.
“I was like, ‘Damn, Vince, what if after the finish I point to God, give him the belts and leave, but I do that slow Three Stooges turn, I go back and gaff his ass and call myself Triple H, Hollywood Hulk Hogan?’” Hogan said. “He said, ‘That would never work, and you can’t be a heel.’ So, he squashed that.”
While McMahon dismissed the idea at the time, Hogan eventually turned heel in 1996, forming the legendary New World Order in WCW as “Hollywood” Hogan. Triple H, the name Hogan once suggested for himself, would later become synonymous with Paul Levesque, who debuted in 1992 and later adopted the moniker in 1997.Bottom of Form
