How WWE Icon Really Feels About Gunther Smashing Their Record
Gunther has had an unstoppable rise in WWE that saw him break a record that once stood for 25 years.
Gunther held the WWE Intercontinental Title for a record-setting 666 days when he lost the gold to Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40. The Ring General’s run with the gold smashed the 453-day reign that had long been the longest in WWE that was achieved by the Honky Tonk Man.
Honky Tonk Man Had No Idea About Gunther’s WWE Success
Speaking on The Pick, Honky Tonk Man was asked about Gunther breaking his long-standing record and said he was very fortunate to hold the record for so long but Gunther’s success came as a surprise to him:
It held up for a long, long time. In fact this is the anniversary this week of when I won the title from Ricky ‘The Dragon’ Steamboat in Buffalo, New York. It was the first weekend of June, if I was correct, somebody posted it was like 28 years or something.
I was very, very fortunate to hold the belt for as long as I did, and then for the record to stand for as long as it did, it’s one of those things where you don’t even think about it. I didn’t even know this Gunther, I don’t know him at all, never met him, I didn’t know that he was chasing the record or anything. I don’t keep up with the product that much now because I’m not involved in it. I’m still a fan and I still love it, I don’t methodically sit and study the wrestling any more.
