How Roman Reigns’ Loss Marked A Turning Point In WWE History

Roman Reigns scowling at the camera

A loss for Roman Reigns proved to be a watershed moment in the entire wrestling industry, according to one WWE star.

Roman Reigns dominated WWE for years as the untouchable Universal Champion. The Tribal Chief’s power was consolidated when he surrounded himself with The Bloodline and captured the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 38.

That WrestleMania also saw the huge WWE return of Cody Rhodes, who appeared as Seth Rollins’ mystery opponent on that show. Rhodes made clear he was back in the company to “finish his story” and do what his legendary father, Dusty Rhodes, never did and become WWE Champion.

Rhodes got his first bite at that cherry at WrestleMania 39 when he clashed with Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. However, Rhodes came up short on that occasion, much to the dismay of many fans. The American Nightmare got his second shot when he won back-to-back Royal Rumbles in 2024 and met Reigns again at WrestleMania 40.

This time, the likes of Jey Uso, Kevin Owens, The Undertaker, and Seth Rollins were all on hand to see off the threat of The Bloodline and make sure Cody Rhodes captured the WWE Championship for the first time in his career.

Roman Reigns’ Loss Most Important Recent Match In WWE History?

Speaking on the Games With Names podcast, Seth Rollins has given his thoughts on that match and why the loss proved to be a pivotal point in WWE history:

I think the most important match that we’ve had recently with the most story and the most build that could probably push this list strong is the WrestleMania 40 Night 2 main event with Roman and Cody and the kind of the death of the bloodline and all the things that went into that whole story and then getting to that point where Roman finally loses the title. I mean, that’s that’s a that’s a watershed moment in our industry.
