How Religion Inspired WWE Star’s Character
A WWE superstar drew on his family’s religion to create his pro wrestling character.
Wrestling fans know Aleister Black as a darker figure, mysterious in many ways. During his early days in WWE, he would be featured in promos in the dark, spouting riddles.
When he was in AEW as Malakai Black, it was more of the same, as he led the House of Black.
Since returning to WWE as Aleister Black, the former NXT Champion has been paired up with his wife, Zelina Vega, as they continue to play mind games with everybody in their path.
During an appearance on The Cody Tucker Show, Aleister Black revealed that his family’s religious beliefs helped inspire what he’s doing on WWE television.
“For me, it came from a childhood experience growing up in a family that had very. Very deeply religious ties, pressing cult like devotion on one side of my family, where my father was from.“
Black would go on to say that while his father didn’t necessarily agree with these views, but there were people in his extended family who did.
“The religion itself was very bleak, very end-of-the-world type, everyone’s a sinner. The world’s coming to an end. Very devoted followers.”
WWE’s Aleister Black Was Interested In Religion
As he continued, Aleister Black spoke about how he didn’t understand religion, but he was interested in it.
“Because of the strong ties to religion, and me not understanding religion and always questioning religion, I got a huge interest in religion. You start also getting an interest in the counteracting parts of that. So I went from like, you know, religion to the occult.
I guess, in a way, you know, you rebel against the system that, like, you grow up in, because you don’t agree with it. You realize that outside of those boundaries is where life really is, and we search for it more and more.”
Since he was interested in learning more, Black sought more information in books and comics.
“The more I read, the more knowledge I wanted to know, the more I knew, the more restless I became. I remember like being 11, 12, years old, and laying awake at three in the morning because I’m trying to figure out the universe.”
