How John Cena’s Brother Helped Come Up With “You Can’t See Me” Gesture
John Cena’s famous “You Can’t See Me” gesture came from a silly remark from one of his brothers.
For over 20 years, WWE Intercontinental Champion John Cena has been waving his hand in front of his face and saying, “You Can’t See Me.”
The “You Can’t See Me” hand gesture is also something Cena does during matches before he drops the dreaded Five Knuckle Shuffle fist drop on an opponent lying down in the ring.
Of course, the “You Can’t See Me” phrase has also led to years of people making jokes and memes about how they can’t see Cena as if he’s some invisible being.
The 17-time WWE World Champion John Cena was on ESPN’s First Take to promote WWE Raw in Madison Square Garden, and he was asked about the origins of the “You Can’t See Me” hand gesture.
“It is my life, dude. Happy accident. When we played my little brother, Sean, the album, he kept doing this (hand gesture). And I’m like, ‘Man, you look stupid!’
And he’s like, ‘Yo, I bet you won’t do that on TV.’ And I was wrestling in matches that no one cared about. I was on an obscure Saturday program called Velocity. No one ever watched it.
So I’m like, ‘Fine, nobody’s watching, you guys can’t see me.’ It stuck. And here I am, the invisible man, 23 years later. Whole thing is a happy accident. Not even supposed to be here…yes.”
John Cena Plans To Give It His All In WWE Raw Farewell
The November 17th episode of WWE Raw will be John Cena’s last as an active wrestler, and it will take place in New York City’s famous Madison Square Garden.
During his First Take appearance, John Cena spoke about how it’s a chance to close a chapter for him.
“It’s exciting and I want these nights to be exciting. I think, by leveraging the impact, like hey, this isn’t just my thing. Just because I kinda relate it to me living is like us closing a chapter. It is a decade or two decades in WWE we’re closing and we’re starting anew.
So if anything I did, or you watched because of someone else, and I was involved in the program for 20 years, this is a chance to close that chapter in the World’s Most Famous Arena on Netflix live on Raw. So I just want to make these moments special. Like every other night I’m going to give it all I got and we’ll see what happens after.”
