Hiroshi Tanahashi Sorry For Shock NJPW Exits

Hiroshi Tanahashi NJPW

Hiroshi Tanahashi made a last-ditch attempt to keep one of his biggest stars.

On April 14, it was announced that NJPW had released Jeff Cobb at his request. While more abrupt than some were expecting, Cobb’s departure didn’t come as a surprise, as he’s been linked with a move to WWE for several weeks.

However, the next announcement left fans stunned. Just two days later, it was confirmed that four-time World Champion and NJPW legend Tetsuya Naito has also agreed to leave the company.

Although injuries have taken their toll in recent years, Naito has remained one of the biggest and most marketable names in the company.

It’s also been confirmed that Bushi will leave the company, and again, there’s no word on his next move.

Hiroshi Tanahashi Saddened By Tetsuya Naito Decision

In a short statement following the news, NJPW President Hiroshi Tanahashi said he was shocked and saddened by the news on Naito. He added that he spoke with the veteran and tried to get him to change his mind, but he was unable to do so.

“I’m sorry to have shocked and saddened everyone with this news today.

I spoke with Naito yesterday. I told him that I wanted Naito, who loves New Japan, to stay with the company until the very end, but his will was firm and I couldn’t change it. We will respect his wishes and have him leave the company.

I ask for your continued support for Naito and BUSHI during the remaining time of their reunion.”

A further report from Fightful Select noted that it would be a surprise to see Naito move to AEW, despite having appeared for the promotion previously. The company’s management team doesn’t have an interest in signing the star on a permanent basis.
