Highly-Anticipated AEW Match Happening “Way Sooner Than Expected”
A long-awaited AEW match is closer than ever.
On March 20, it was reported that Mercedes Mone and Athena were finally being positioned for a match. There were even suggestions that the bout could happen as soon as Dynasty.
Fans have been calling for the match from the day Mone walked into AEW and now the two dominant champions are on a collision course. Mone has held the TBS Championship for over 300 days, and Athena is the longest-reigning Ring of Honor Champion in history having held the Women’s Title 844 days and counting.
Since then, it’s been announced that both women will be part of the Owen Hart Cup in the coming weeks.
AEW Making Plans For Mercedes Mone vs. Athena
According to a new update via Fightful Select, the match between Athena and Mone could now happen “way sooner than expected.” While many initially felt the bout would take place at All In Texas because of Athena’s links to the region, “other creative suggestions” have been made for that show.
One source noted that Mone and Athena weren’t put into the Owen Hart Tournament by accident.
Despite heavy speculation, there’s no word on whether the match will happen at Dynasty on April 6, but the pair are expected to meet “in the coming months.”
The brackets for the 2025 edition of the Owen Hart Cup will be announced on the April 2 edition of Dynamite. The winners of each tournament have traditionally challenged for the respective World Championships at All In.
