Henry Godwinn Reveals Past Tensions With WWE Hall Of Famer

Former WWE Tag Team Champion Henry Godwinn recently shared insights into a tumultuous period involving WWE Hall of Famer Jake “The Snake” Roberts during an interview with WSI – Wrestling Shoot Interviews. Godwinn, whose real name is Mark Canterbury, recounted a series of incidents from early 1997 that led to significant friction between The Godwinns and Roberts.

Godwinn explained that WWE management had assigned Roberts to travel with him and his tag team partner Phineas in an attempt to keep Roberts, who was struggling with substance abuse issues at the time, on track. But, the arrangement quickly turned problematic.

Everybody knows he had a bad drug problem back then and so they put him with us to get him to the towns and keep an eye on him. He rode with us for about a week and the first couple of days were okay. Then it was like banging on the door for an hour and calling him, he was freaking out in his room, and now we’re all starting to be late for TV.

The situation escalated when Roberts allegedly misused Godwinn’s hotel room and Phineas’ rental car for several days. Godwinn described Roberts as being “down in the hood and doing all the crazy stuff” during this time.

Frustrated by the situation, Godwinn confronted WWE management.

I called the office and said this is bulls**t. Either you can reimburse us or he can or we’re gonna take it out of his ass when we get to TV.

The incident reportedly led to Roberts’ dismissal from the company. Henry Godwinn concluded by acknowledging Roberts’ wild behaviour during that period.

He was just unpredictable back then.
