This WWE Legend, along with others, doesn’t support the idea of WWE’s Netflix docu-series UnReal

Kayfabe was maintained throughout the 20th century until the late 1980s and early 1990s with full conviction by wrestlers and everyone involved in wrestling to keep the audience in the dark about the secrets behind the in-ring action and the show’s production.

The curtains were pulled back slightly in the late 90s when Vince McMahon revealed to the world that wrestling is not a sport; it’s entertainment. But kayfabe was still maintained by many wrestlers outside the ring to protect their characters and make their rivalries feel believable.

In today’s time, the curtain has been pulled all the way back, with kayfabe no longer a factor in WWE. Wrestlers being friendly backstage, appearing on each other’s podcasts, with every detail being posted on social media, reveals to fans how the business works.

With WWE Unreal, this exposure has been taken to another level with the company actively choosing to explain how they do what they do to the fans.

WWE Hall Of Famer Bully Ray Slams UnReal Series

Bully Ray, in a conversation with Busted Open Radio, said that he was against the idea of being so revelatory about the business. He feels it hurts the business as the wrestling industry gets exposed.

“Why would you ever want to do that?I do not agree with it at all. I hate it; a lot of other veterans hate it.”

Bully Ray then suggested that there are even more wrestlers, including young ones who dislike the idea of “WWE Unreal” but are too afraid to call WWE out on it.

Everybody knows it’s wrong. We should never expose our industry. We should never be exposing our secrets. This is our fraternity. This is our sorority.

Ray observed that fans no longer play a role in a star’s push in the company and are being made painfully aware of that with detailed revelations from the company’s back end. He gave the example of Jey Uso’s push that the fans initially thought was organic, but was shown to be planned in WWE Unreal season 1.

I hated that because, to me, as a wrestling fan, I want to think that, ‘Wow, my cheering is the one that got Jey Uso over! Jey is over because we cheered for him so loud!'”
