GUNTHER Reveals Why WWE Intercontinental Title Reign Feels Surreal
As he heads into another WrestleMania as Intercontinental Champion, GUNTHER has reflected on what the title reign has meant to him.
Since winning the WWE Intercontinental Title in June 2022, Gunther has proven himself as a fighting champion. For most of his title defenses, Gunther has taken on all comers and beaten everybody in his path without the help of his Imperium stable mates Ludwig Kaiser & Giovanni Vinci.
That Intercontinental Title reign has stretched over 600 days as the talented Austrian looks to defend the gold at his second straight WrestleMania event.
In the main event of WWE Monday Night Raw on March 11th, Gunther learned that he’ll defend the Intercontinental Title against Sami Zayn at WrestleMania 40 on April 6 or 7th. Zayn earned that title match by winning a Gauntlet Match where he last eliminated Chad Gable.
While talking to 967 The Eagle, Gunther spoke about what it meant to be the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history.
“It’s a little bit surreal to see your own name on the list with all those legends and greats who have held the title for a long time as well. It’s also very important that you see yourself like that and recognize yourself as one of them. In my case, being on the top of the list. You have to fully embrace that. It takes a little while to do that, but I’m fully there now.”
“I’m not stopping yet. I still have a little in me with the Intercontinental Championship and I’m fully focused on whatever the next challenge is. Adding to my legacy and the legacy of the championship.”
What Are GUNTHER And Sami Zayn Doing On Monday Night Raw?
During a commercial that aired during Smackdown in Memphis, it was announced that on the March 18th edition of Raw, Gunter and Sami Zayn will have a contract signing segment to set up their Intercontinental Title clash at WrestleMania 40.
It will be the second straight WrestleMania where Zayn will be looking for gold because, at WrestleMania 39, Zayn & Kevin Owens ended The Usos record-breaking Tag Team Title reign in a scintillating Night 1 main event match. At that same WrestleMania, Gunther won an incredible triple threat match over Sheamus & Drew McIntyre to keep the Intercontinental Title.
What that also means is that, for the second year in a row, Zayn will have the chance to end a record-breaking title reign. It won’t be easy considering nobody has been able to beat Gunther in a singles match in nearly two years.
