Gunther Hits Back At Idea World Title Win Is Tainted
Gunther has slammed suggestions that his World Heavyweight Championship win at SummerSlam is tainted.
‘The Ring General’ earned the opportunity to challenge for the gold at Cleveland Browns Stadium on 3rd August after storming to victory in the King Of The Ring tournament in Saudi Arabia in May.
The Austrian star was embroiled in a fierce battle with defending Champion Damian Priest at SummerSlam and looked set to miss out on the title when Priest delivered a devastating South Of Heaven chokeslam to the challenger.
With a pinfall victory looking certain, Judgment Day member Finn Balor betrayed Priest by placing Gunther’s foot on the bottom rope to break the count. Soon after, Gunther locked a shocked Priest in a sleeper hold to seal his first World Heavyweight Championship.
Despite the interference of Balor, Gunther has voiced his belief that the manner of his victory is nothing to be ashamed of. Speaking during the SummerSlam Post-Show, the leader of Imperium dismissed claims that the legitimacy of his maiden World Heavyweight Championship could be questioned:
“Nothing’s tainted, no reservations. Nothing to be ashamed of.
From this day forth, Monday Night Raw and the legacy of the World Heavyweight Championship belong to me. If anybody out there thinks I don’t deserve this, they know where to find me.”
Gunther Amongst Four Newly Champions At SummerSlam
It proved to be a difficult night for defending title holders at SummerSlam, with four new Champions being crowned in Cleveland.
Whilst Gunther’s World Heavyweight Championship victory arguably stole the headlines, there were also title wins for Nia Jax, LA Knight and Bron Breakker on an unprecedented night in Ohio.
