Gunther Believes “People In The Company Weren’t Happy” After John Cena’s Final WWE Match

John Cena gunther Tap Out

Gunther has shared his thoughts on how people in WWE reacted to his victory over John Cena in their only match.

The main event of Saturday Night’s Main Event in Washington, D.C. saw the former World Champion Gunther beat the 17-time WWE World Champion John Cena in what was Cena’s retirement match.

Since the match took place, many wrestling fans have complained about the match results because they wanted Cena to win and certainly didn’t want Cena to tap out in defeat.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Gunther claimed that people in WWE didn’t like what happened.

“I know a lot of people weren’t happy with what happened on Saturday and how it happened. I know a lot of people in the company were not happy with that but that’s fine. If anyone’s got an issue with that, I’m very easy to find.”

It is certainly possible that those comments could be spoken in character by the former 2-time World Champion, but there could also be truth to it.

Gunther Praised John Cena In Comparison To Goldberg

During the same interview, Gunther showed some respect for Cena for being a good wrestler and somebody who had a connection with the fans. That led to the proud Austrian to also take a few shots at another legend he retired earlier this year, Bill Goldberg.

“Goldberg was way more limited than John was, and John was just a better wrestler over his whole career. It’s not like a dig to Goldberg, he didn’t get famous by putting on in-ring master classes, that was never his thing. It was a very different situation.

“But also the magnitude of it. Obviously Goldberg is a big name but it’s not comparable to what John Cena represents, or the following he has and what he carries with him (and) the connection that people have to him, so it’s hard to compare.”

On the first WWE Raw episode after Saturday Night’s Main Event, Gunther bragged about Cena and was booed heavily by the crowd. As the bragging continued, he was told to leave the show, which led to a parking lot staredown with AJ Styles, who is planning to retire in 2026. Was it foreshadowing Gunther retiring Styles as well? Perhaps.
