Gunther Names Surprising Pick For Favourite Opponent
Gunther is proud of one of his more surprising rivalries.
Before going on to win the World Heavyweight Championship, Gunther became the longest-running Intercontinental Champion in history. During this period of his WWE career, the Austrian star wrestled a series of acclaimed matches opposite the likes of Sheamus, Drew McIntyre, and more before ultimately losing to Sami Zayn.
Gunther also defended the gold against The Miz in what was a true clash of styles.
During an interview with Ariel Helwani, the champion talked up his rivalry with Miz, although he never imagined that a match with the star would be one of his favourites.
“I never envisioned Miz as one of my favorite opponents, but the program I did with him for the IC Title is one of my favorite ones. Similar with the stuff with Jey, it’s complete opposites, and it challenges me to find a different route to make it work for my side.
I always hope I can challenge the other person to take that extra step to try something new. On paper, there are things, ‘I’m going to enjoy that,’ and sometimes it doesn’t turn out like that. The stuff where you go, ‘let’s see how that goes,’ it’s fantastic.”
Gunther Changes Mind On Jey Uso
During the same interview, Gunther said he didn’t think Jey Uso would have been a good WrestleMania opponent, but the build to the match has changed his mind. The World Champion added that he represented the best opponent for any up-and-coming star who had become red hot.
He went on to break down why the road to WrestleMania had been a challenge, but he and Uso had worked hard to tell a good story.
