Gunther Shares Surprising Truth About Real-Life Relationship With John Cena
Gunther is set to clash with John Cena in the latter’s final ever match in wrestling.
Cena has been adamant about not competing inside the squared circle after December 13, 2025. Whether or not he goes back on his word is anybody’s guess.
The Ring General, on the other hand, made his triumphant return to WWE after a brief time off owing to surgery.
Gunther made his full-time return on November 17 by competing in the first round match of the ‘Last Time Is Now’ tournament against Je’Von Evans.
In the following weeks, he beat three other superstars to emerge as the victor of the tournament, thus winning the right to challenge Cena in his last wrestling bout.
Recently appearing on The Rich Eisen Show, the 38-year-old lifted the lid on his relationship with the 17-time world champion outside of the ring.
When asked if he had interacted with John Cena a lot backstage, Gunther admitted that that wasn’t the case, which makes their match on Saturday rather interesting.
Oh, I can count on one hand, like, maybe I shook his hand three times, said hello; that’s all the interaction I had with him so far. But I think that’s interesting. It’s usually…I know my opponents more or less. We all work in the same company, but it’s not the case with him. So. I think that’s interesting. [2:14 onwards]
Gunther Targets John Cena’s Two-Decade-Long Streak
Going into his last wrestling match at Saturday Night’s Main Event, one of the achievements that John Cena can gloat about is having never tapped out to any opponent in the last two decades.
The last time he did was on October 24, 2005, during a singles match against Kurt Angle.
Along with his deadly powerbomb finisher, Gunther has also mastered submissions, often choking out his opponents, or, like he tapped out LA Knight in the final, using a cravat submission.
The Austrian superstar reiterated his plan about making Cena tap out on Saturday.
I’m looking for him to give up, to admit he can’t go no more. That’s what I’m going to go for. And yeah, I think that’s where the drama is as well in that match, going into it.
