John Cena faced Gunther in his retirement match at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13.

The 38-year-old Australian star forced Cena to tap out in his last match. After Gunther beat Cena, he celebrated in the ring for only a few moments, while Cena was in the ring for a long time.

The entire locker room came out to pay their respect to the veteran. A video montage was then played as a tribute to the 17-time World Champion.

In a new interview with TMZ’s Inside The Ring, Gunther was asked to share what he did immediately after he left the ring and went backstage.

Gunther replied that he didn’t talk to anyone and quietly exited the building. He only interacted with people backstage on the following Monday on RAW.

To be honest, I kind of like disappeared. I didn’t really speak to many people because yeah, just sometimes when the damage is done, you leave and you don’t take a bath in it anymore.

I took a bath in it on Monday and yeah, I haven’t really been around after the match. (From 8:22)

Gunther had To Be Escorted By Security After Retiring John Cena

When Gunther left the building, he was met with some angry fans who were waiting for him outside.

They hounded him with “F**k You Gunther” chants. But thankfully, he had security backup who safely escorted him back to his tour bus.

Gunther said that he could feel the tension in the air as he made his way to his tour bus. He could sense that the fans were quite mad at him.

It felt really good. It’s like I could tell the whole day already.

It’s different because my bus like my tour bus was parked outside the venue and I always kind of like had to be escorted through a bunch of people, a bunch of fans to get to the building.

And usually when I leave the building and there’s people, you get like a little ahh, Gunther, boo, haha.

But it felt tense from the like early in the day already, I could feel it felt tense.

So the the people really wanted to see John win and really wanted to have that good feel moment with him at the end of it, but it didn’t happen.

You don’t always get what you want. (From 1:08)
