Gunther Equals 30 Year Old WWE Record

Gunther WWE Intercontinental Champion

Gunther continued his record-setting Intercontinental Championship reign on Raw, equalling another 30-year WWE record in the process.

Following another impressive outing at the Royal Rumble, Gunther was back in action on Raw as he successfully defended his Intercontinental Title against former WWE Champion Kofi Kingston.

WWE Stats revealed that Gunther’s win over Kofi Kingston on Raw marked a successful defence against his fifteenth different opponent, a record not seen since Mr. Perfect did that in 1991:

Tonight on #WWERaw, @Gunther_AUTbecame the first Superstar since Mr. Perfect (in 1990-1991) to retain the @WWEIntercontinental Championship against FIFTEEN different opponents during a single #ICTitle reign.

Gunther Emulates Mr Perfect On WWE Raw

Mr Perfect defended his Intercontinental Championship against Rico Federico, Danny Brazil, Roddy Piper, Kerry von Erich, Tommy Angel, Pat Armstrong, Shawn Michaels, Dale Wolfe, Reno Riggins, Big Boss Man, Randy Tyler, Jerry Stevens, Tugboat, Jim Evans, Larry Ludden, Larry Williams, Mike Daniels.

Ultimately Perfect lost his title to Bret Hart in an all-time classic at SummerSlam 1991.

Gunther’s list of defeated challengers reads like a who’s who of modern greats in WWE as it includes Ricochet, Shinsuke Nakamura, Sheamus, Rey Mysterio, Braun Strowman, Madcap Moss, Drew McIntyre, Xavier Woods, Mustafa Ali, Matt Riddle, Chad Gable, Tommaso Ciampa, Bronson Reed, The Miz, as well as Kofi Kingston.

Gunther’s WrestleMania plans could be up in the air as it seems his reported planned opponent Brock Lesnar won’t return to WWE after he was implicated in the horrifying lawsuit filed against Vince McMahon.
