Goldberg Almost Wrestled For Indie Promotion In 2024

Goldberg nearly returned to the ring outside of WWE.

At Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, Goldberg wrestled his final match against Gunther as he failed to capture the World Heavyweight Championship.

On the big night, the WCW legend was led to the ring by a stacked entourage that included Josh Barnett.

During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Barnett reflected on being alongside Goldberg for his last match and revealed that they had an agreement to work together in 2024. This would have seen the pair square off that June in the main event of a show at Sumo Hall.

“The original main event was actually going to be me vs. Bill Goldberg. Me and Bill had come to an agreement about it and everything, and we were trying to make it happen, but at the end of the day, it wasn’t something we could put together. But we’d agreed on pretty much all the necessary items, but he’s a very, very important man with a lot of obligations and contracts and all sorts of stuff.”

When Barnett was asked whether he still wanted to work with the star, he admitted he’d never close the door on a potential deal.

“Anytime Bill decides that’s something he wants to do, then I’m there, but he’s had an incredible career.”

Barnett went on to praise Natalya following her Bloodsport debut back in April, where she defeated Miyu Yamashita. He added that she’s always easy to work with, before highlighting her continued desire to wrestle at a high level despite everything she’s already achieved.

Natalya is set to return to Bloodsport on August 2 to face TNA star Masha Slamovich.

AEW Has No Interest In Goldberg

In the days after his WWE farewell against Gunther, Goldberg was critical of the company’s handling of his retirement run and refused to promise that he’d never wrestle again. This sparked comments online that Goldberg could find his way to AEW for a one-off goodbye.

That speculation only increased when MJF said he’d be open to wrestling the veteran, even if it was only to embarrass him on the way out.

However, a subsequent report claimed that AEW has no interest in working with Goldberg, and the company believes he’s still under contract with WWE.
