Goldberg Wanted Special Retirement Match In Israel
Goldberg had a different dream for his last match.
Back in November, Goldberg announced that he’d be stepping back into the ring one more time in 2025.
Since then, the former World Champion has been working on treating old injuries and getting into the best shape possible for his final hurrah.
The veteran hasn’t wrestled since losing to Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber in February 2022. The 58-year-old later claimed he’d been promised a retirement match by Vince McMahon after competing in Saudi Arabia despite only recently overcoming Covid-19.
Goldberg Wanted To Wrestle In Israel
During an appearance on The Claw podcast with Ross Von Erich and Marshall Von Erich, Goldberg discussed his work with Wrestling Israel and his original hope for one last match.
“I’ll do anything for my faith. Truth be told, my dream was to have my retirement match in Israel. Quite obviously, because of the surroundings right now and over the past five years, it just hasn’t been the right place to do it. I would be remiss if I didn’t tell you that I was sorely disappointed that I couldn’t do something in Israel, but retired doesn’t mean dead.
I would be honored to go out there at some point, I really would. Never say never, but we’ve been trying to do it for the past number of years and it didn’t work out. Fingers crossed, that’s all you can do.”
While he might not be getting his original wish, the WWE Hall of Famer recently claimed that his last match will take place in “the South,” although he declined to give further details.
However, according to a report from Fightful Select, Goldberg’s retirement match has been discussed for Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 12, Atlanta, Georgia. There’s no word on his opponent, but Gunther has been heavily linked with a match with the WCW legend for several months.
Goldberg has a long-standing association with Atlanta, having played in the NFL for the Falcons before training to become a wrestler. The star also won the WCW World Heavyweight Championship by beating Hulk Hogan in front of 41,000 fans at the Georgia Dome in July 1998.
