Freddie Prinze Jr. Called John Cena A “Jerk” After WWE Backstage Incident
Hollywood star Freddie Prinze Jr. did not have himself a fan in John Cena.
Prinze has been a long-time wrestling fan and was spotted attending WrestleMania XXIV in 2008.
After regularly writing about the WWE happenings, he was brought in as part of the promotion’s creative team in 2008, but he was reported to have left the following year.
He joined the company again in 2010 as a director and producer. Prinze quit the company a couple of years later.
During this time, he had a couple of unsavory run-ins with Cena, who was one of the top stars at the time.
Another wrestler who struggled to perform alongside Cena was David Otunga. Otunga recently revealed instances af abuse he endured from the former World Champion.
In a video shared on his YouTube channel, Otunga revealed another incident, where he got heat from Cena, only for Freddie Prinze Jr. to come to his defense.
During this period, Cena was forced to join The Nexus after losing a match to Wade Barrett. Cena then captured the WWE Tag Team Championship alongside David Otunga.
However, on Barrett’s orders, Otunga dropped the title to his teammate by lying down in the ring.
Otunga revealed that Cena was angry at how the events transpired, dressing him down backstage, when Prinze offered him support.
And then Freddie Prinze came over after that, and he was like, “Man, you know Cena’s a jerk. He was trying to bury you in there.” And he’s like, “But luckily I was in there, and I disagreed. I thought your acting was great.” And I’ll never forget this, and Freddie said to me, he’s like, “You’ve seen Cena’s movies, haven’t you?” And I was like, “Yeah.” And he goes, “All right. ‘Nuff said.” [42:49 onwards]
Freddie Prinze Jr.-John Cena Rivalry
Freddie Prinze Jr. and John Cena did not get along initially.
Reportedly, Cena was against Prinze joining WWE. The Hollywood star even revealed that Cena referred to him as ‘Ashton Kutcher,’ adding to his passive-aggressive vibe.
Cena subsequently inserted himself in a situation that almost saw them clash physically.
The story goes: Prinze held an acting class for junior wrestlers like Zack Ryder and Curt Hawkins so that they could improve their mic skills.
Cena burst into the class unannounced and went on a rant, saying none of his exercises was going to work.
He even challenged Prinze to “talk outside,” which the actor self-admittedly found terrifying.
Down the line, both seem to have buried the hatchet, with Freddie Prinze Jr. even defending his retirement run after it received criticism.
