Fox To Develop a Wrestling Comedy Along With The Rock

According to Variety, former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Hollywood’s biggest star, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is developing a new pro wrestling-inspired comedy show for Fox. Along with Johnson’s Seven Bucks Productions, the show will also feature Will Ferrell as a producer (Gary Sanchez Productions), as it is inspired by the lives of The Rock and Brian Gewirtz — former WWE head writer — from their times spent in the WWE.

The Rock spoke about the upcoming project with Variety saying:

“This November will mark the 20th anniversary of my professional wrestling debut. I was 24 years old, putting in the hard work, making $40 bucks per match and had no clue of the long journey that lay ahead of me with characters and backstage stories so colorful you’d think there’s no way that can be true. The entertaining show that goes on in front of the crowd pales in comparison to the insanely entertaining show that goes on backstage. Brian and myself can’t wait to tell our stories.”

Additionally, Gewirtz stated, “Coming from Hollywood to the wrestling industry, with its intense backstage atmosphere and larger than life personalities, was a major culture shock.” His unique perspective will add a very interesting dynamic to the show’s script, as he can recall back to a plethora of experiences with The Rock in the WWE. “After working in the business for over 15 years, Dwayne and I had encounters and experiences that were unbelievable as well as unforgettable. We can’t wait to bring this project to the fans.”

The comedy will feature an uncanny look at the relationship between a mega-star and the lesser-known writer behind the larger-than-life wrestler. Completely unfamiliar with the world of wrestling, but with the power of creativity and writing on his side, the writer will have the charismatic wrestling star to both clash and work with throughout the series.

With the media juggernaut Dwayne Johnson behind the project, Fox could potentially have the next great series on their hands — assuming it airs eventually. Along with being pegged as Hollywood’s richest actor, Johnson has been all over a multitude of screens, from cinema, to television’s “Ballers,” to even his new YouTube channel — The Rock is all over the place.
