Former WWE Superstar Explains Why The United States Championship Is The Number 2 Belt

Wrestling icon Lex Luger shared which of his numerous championship wins holds the deepest significance for him.

During a Q&A session on Ad Free Shows, the multi-time champion and former WWE Superstar reflected on the title that marked his rise in the industry—the NWA United States Championship, which he first won from Nikita Koloff in a Steel Cage match in 1987.

“It was my first really big one. When I won that, I came out of that cage match with Nikita in Greensboro and, man, there’s a picture of me holding the belt up with a big smile on my face. I go, ‘Man, I’ve arrived.’”

At the time, the United States Championship was considered one of the most prestigious titles in professional wrestling, second only to the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. For Luger, claiming the belt signified his growing prominence in the wrestling world.

“Back then, the US Title was very prestigious, it was the number two belt behind the world title for a long time. It was a big deal, so I thought, ‘I’m making it, man.’”

Luger also expressed admiration for the look of the title, as well as pride in his record-breaking reigns.

“Not to brag or anything, but that’s a beautiful US title, isn’t it? I don’t mean to brag, but I’m still the longest-reigning US Champion ever—both consecutive days, 500-something, and total days, 900-something, almost a thousand days. I haven’t been unseated, and some say that’ll never be broken.”

Despite a career full of championship achievements, Luger’s connection to the US Title underscores both its legacy in the wrestling world and his lasting impact on the sport.

Who Does Lex Luger Want To Induct Him Into The WWE Hall Of Fame?

Lex Luger spoke about who he would pick to induct him into the WWE Hall of Fame if he received induction and said that WWE Hall of Famer and former WCW rival Sting would be his top pick. Luger’s pick comes as no surprise as he and Sting have had many memorable encounters over the years with their first singles match together taking place in 1989 and their last taking place in 2002.
