Forgotten WWE Tag Team Were Once Set To Win Championship Gold

There are plenty of unlikely duos in wrestling, but this combination was surprisingly set to win WWE tag team gold at one point.

In 2006, the surprising combination of Gene Snitsky and Goldust teamed up to do battle with The Spirit Squad. This even led to them challenging Johnny and Nicky for the World Tag Team Championships on 15th May that year, although their attempt was unsuccessful and they were never given another opportunity at the straps.

However, in an interview with Mike Chioda on his Monday Mailbag, Snitsky has now revealed that the team were meant to win the titles at one point, but that the situation changed very quickly.

We were supposed to get the tag team straps when I was teaming with Goldust, and then he had a meltdown and that went by the wayside. They were going to do merch [merchandise]. We had a meeting with Stephanie (McMahon), they were going to do merch and all kind of stuff, and we were going to win the straps. Then, he calls me, leaves a voice message just going off the deep end. Obviously, he needed to get some help and get cleaned up. I can’t fault him for that, but we were supposed to win the tag team belts.

Snitsky left WWE in 2008 and officially retired from in-ring competition in 2018. Rhodes would go on to be released by WWE just a month after the team’s title shot after he didn’t show up for an event. He now competes in AEW, where it seems he will spend what he has called his final year in wrestling.
