The Forgotten WWE Star Brought Back Long Before R-Truth
It seems R-Truth isn’t the first unlikely WWE star to be brought back after a groundswell of fan support.
The wrestling world was stunned when R-Truth revealed his WWE contract would not be renewed, and he was on his way out of the company. This led to several “We want Truth” chants from the crowd on WWE shows as they let their feelings be known.
They got what they wanted when R-Truth made his shock return at Money In The Bank. Despite Triple H trying to insinuate Truth’s exit and return was all part of an elaborate master plan, the truth is the company changed their mind. And it’s happened before when under the leadership of Vince McMahon.
R-Truth Follows In The Blue Meanie’s WWE Footsteps
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer noted that this was not the first time WWE had capitulated to fan opinion when bringing someone back, as Vince McMahon did the same for an unlikely star back in 1999:
It sets a weird precedent because now the fans will think that if they cut someone they like, they can get them back. The funny thing is, this happened before. Blue Meanie. Years and years ago, Blue Meanie was cut, and there was enough outcry on social media that Vince made the call, “We don’t want people heckling at our shows, so we’re going to bring him back.” But I’m sure when they brought him back, he was just waiting to cut him again.
In this case, I’m pretty sure the guy is gonna get a couple of years’ contract, which is great for him.
The Blue Meanie himself reminded fans on social media of his plight and how Jim Ross broke the news that fan support had led to Vince McMahon changing his mind:
I was released by WWF in 99 and was immediately brought back after a “Save The Meanie” was started by the “Strictly ECW” crew. Russo told me they inundated their email system and flooded the call banks. JR called me and said, “There’s been a reprieve from the warden.”
