Ex-WWE Star Says John Cena Buried Him Because He Felt Threatened

John Cena on WWE Raw

This is John Cena’s last week as an active WWE wrestler. He will work his last match on December 13th, 2025, at Saturday Night’s Main Event and hang up his boots.

While headlines are about how The Champ made a positive impact on the industry and people, not all stories are about his glory days.

Just like other mortals, Cena has had his bad moments. Recently, David Otunga shared one about how John Cena tried to bury him.

John Cena felt threatened by David Otunga, claims former WWE superstar

On a recent video on his YouTube channel, David Otunga opened up about a time in WWE that he held onto for 15 years. He claimed that this was a story of a difficult experience with John Cena, and how he overcame it by looking at the positive side of it.

He claimed that John Cena tried to bury him, despite being the top guy, because he felt threatened by the rookie. Instead of letting it bring Otunga down, the former WWE superstar decided to rise above and take that as praise.

I took it as a compliment because to me, why would the top guy in the company be so threatened by a rookie that he would even bother going through all this and cussing me out? He was that threatened by me. He was so insecure about his spot and around me. That’s what he did. And this was a common theme, though. So eventually, like I hated being treated like that, but like I had to rise above it and actually just look at it for what it was as a compliment.

Like, yeah, you see me as really being him, which is okay, you see me as a threat. I will take that. That’s high praise. And that’s praise that somebody can’t fake because I mean, otherwise if you didn’t see me as a threat, you wouldn’t even pay me a second thought if I’m being honest.

Whether or not John Cena felt threatened by Otunga is up for debate. Probably, The Champ will not comment about it, and this story will remain one-sided.
