Ex-WWE Star Doubts CM Punk Would Be Successful In Backstage Role

CM Punk’s wrestling knowledge might not be enough to help in a backstage role.

While Triple H has only been heading up WWE since 2022, with Shawn Michaels overseeing NXT since September 2021, talk has already begun about what might come next. This has included suggestions that CM Punk is already looking to take over from HBK when he hangs up his boots.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview, Cody Rhodes suggested there’s a “fight” building backstage with Punk, Seth Rollins, and himself all looking to take over from Triple H when their in-ring careers expire.

Interestingly, Seth Rollins has already confirmed he’s discussed a backstage role.

Ex-Star Praises CM Punk’s Genius, But Expresses Doubts

During an appearance on the Two Man Power Trip of Wrestling podcast, former WWE Superstar Jimmy Wang Yang heaped praise on Punk before discussing his potential for a backstage role. Wang Yang also worked as a producer in 2021, and he doubts that Punk would excel in the position despite his pro wrestling “genius.”

“Punk is awesome. I love Punk. His mindset for the business and the stories and angles that he has in his head are genius. He’s a genius for professional wrestling.

He definitely could (be a producer), but I know he wouldn’t take the s**t that producers have to take, so I don’t know.

It might be different now with the new ownership, but Punk’s not gonna take as much poo-poo as others, so.”

It’s been announced that CM Punk will face a long-time rival when WWE heads to Japan in two weeks.
