Why Ex-WWE Star Didn’t Enjoy Winning Tag Title With John Cena
A former WWE star has opened up about why winning gold with John Cena was not an enjoyable experience for him.
John Cena might be a 17-time WWE Champion, but the iconic star has also held the United States Title on five occasions, and some fans might be surprised to know he’s also a four-time WWE Tag Team Champion. Incredibly, all four of Cena’s reigns with tag team gold came with men that he was feuding with at the time.
Cena and Shawn Michaels headlined WrestleMania 23 together with the WWE Championship on the line while they held the World Tag Team Championship. Two weeks before they clashed at SummerSlam in 2008, John Cena briefly held that title again with Batista.
At Bragging Rights in 2010, John Cena was forced to team with the Nexus’ David Otunga to win the WWE Tag Team Championship. One day later, the Nexus pair of Heath Slater and Justin Gabriel were able to capture that title.
Cena’s final time as a tag team champion was one of the shortest title reigns in WWE history when he won the gold, against Slater and Gabriel, with The Miz ahead of their WrestleMania 27 main event. Cena and Miz lost the gold immediately back to Slater and Gabriel when Miz turned on Cena.
John Cena Title Run Over In A Day
Speaking to MuscleManMalcolm, David Otunga explained why winning his first WWE title was not as happy an occasion as people might think, as he knew he and Cena would be losing the gold almost immediately:
See, it probably wasn’t as joyous of a moment as people would think, like winning your first tag team title because I understood the storyline and where we were going, where you know, as Nexus, we now have John Cena as one of our members. We’re kind of pushing him around.
So we win the titles, but then I knew I was going to lose it the next day. So it’s more like I was part of the story, and don’t get me wrong. It’s an amazing accomplishment. Still, yeah, I’m very proud of it. But just personally, I didn’t feel like I’d earned it yet. Like I was going to have a championship run. Like the company trusted me to hold the title and run. I mean, I just got there. I was as green as grass.
But it was awesome to be in there, with John Cena and in this spot, don’t get me wrong. So it was special for that. But in a way, the second reign was kind of more satisfying to myself because it just, to me personally, it just felt more legitimate. [Fightful]
