Ex-WWE Star Names The Day “The Goldberg Myth Died”
Goldberg’s fearsome reputation was delivered a blow from an unlikely source.
During his peak years in WCW, Goldberg was one of the most fearsome wrestlers in North America. His matches were short, explosive, and often violent displays of power and attitude. In short, when he was inside the ropes, opponents didn’t want to mess with Goldberg.
That reputation also bled over into the atmosphere backstage as the star prided himself on being as real as possible. However, that tough guy persona took a hit — literally, in a backstage fight with Chris Jericho in 2003 while both men were with WWE.
During an interview with Wrestling Shoot Interviews, former WWE Superstar Maven recalled the scuffle and how it changed his perception of the pair.
“Goldberg-Jericho. That was the night the Goldberg myth died, and the Jericho myth was born. I was like, ‘God damn, yo, Chris is not to be toyed with.’ Chris Jericho is light-hearted. Remember earlier, when you were asking about the funniest guys backstage? Chris is up there too, Jericho’s a good time—he’s light-hearted, he’s fun. But he’s also a guy you don’t cross. He’s legit, and he’s not scared at all.”
“I just remember seeing them pulling it apart. I saw guys running up, and Chris… Chris was in the dominant position. Then they separated them, and it started again, and Chris got in the dominant position again. It wasn’t like it was an accident the first time.”
Goldberg Looking Ahead To Retirement Match
In the hours before Crown Jewel, Goldberg announced he’ll be having a retirement match in 2025. There’s no word on when the match will take place or who the WWE Hall of Famer’s opponent will be.
Goldberg hasn’t wrestled since losing to Roman Reigns at Elimination Chamber in Saudi Arabia in February 2022. The veteran has competed in 12 matches since returning to the company in 2016 with a shocking win over Brock Lesnar at Survivor Series.
